Josephine Charles

Founder Josephine Charles is a London trained Psychotherapist / Counsellor who has lived in China for many years, working both as a counsellor at an international medical clinic in Beijing, and as a teacher of English.

Josephine currently lives in Xichang. Josephine also studied Chinese Art at the SOAS University of London and with the Art House Sothebys. She has travelled extensively throughout China, visiting places of cultural, historical and artistic significance.

During a seven week journey through the Liangshan, Yizu Autonomous Region, Josephine observed a dignified people, many of whom are living in conditions of extreme poverty in remote, mountainous rural communities with limited access to education. Resolving to help, she established the Charles Foundation for Children in Need.

Louise Charles

Jo's daughter Louise Charles, pictured here on the Great Wall is the Foundation’s UK/Europe Coordinator. Louise is based in London and spends part of the year in Xichang. Louise has volunteered her services to help the Foundation since its inception and we are very happy to have her now working full time.

 

Kristin Su Nan

Kristin Su Nan is the Foundation’s Coordinator in Xichang, pictured with Jo making Yak butter tea. Su Nan works has a teacher at the Liangshan Minorities Middle School in Xichang. She coordinates and works very closely with Jo on all the Foundation’s activities in China.

Sarah Manning

Sarah Manning is the Foundation’s Co-ordinator in Shanghai. Sarah co-ordinates the fund raising and volunteers living in Shanghai. She originates from the UK and has lived in Asia for 19 years (Japan, Singapore and China). She has been a yoga teacher for 12 years and has supported the Charles Foundation for the last three. She understands that all volunteers need to fit around the demands of their families, jobs and other commitments and so tasks/projects are small and manageable. There is a happy team of volunteers that work together, meeting once a month over large pots of tea.

Sponsors in Shanghai vary from corporate businesses, to expatriate organisations, International Schools, to junior school kids who put on shows in their living room for their friends.

 

Sue Nicholls

Sue Nicholls is the Foundation’s Australian Co-ordinator. Sue is pictured here standing in front of a pile of Tibetan Mani (prayer) stones on the way to Muli. Sue lives in Adelaide and has been a member of the Australian China Friendship Society of South Australia for over 20 years, holding the position of Vice-President for 12 of them.

A highly respected Early childhood professional, Sue has deep sense of connectedness with China, its people, art, music and history. She cares deeply for the welfare and education of underprivileged children in remote rural communities.

Through her fund raising activities she has assisted in building schools and providing classroom equipment for these children and sponsoring girls from ethnic minorities.
