Charles Foundation Photo Exhibition

Recently, Anna Willett, photographer and Charles Foundation volunteer, accompanied Ms. Jo Charles, Charles Foundation’s Founder, and several volunteers and donors to the LiangShan region of SiChuan Province to celebrate the opening of the new AC Sunshine School in Happiness Village.  While in the region, the group also visited the Foundation’s Scholarship students and schools.  Through her lens, Anna captured the amazing beauty, the haunting poverty and inspirational resilience of the YiZu people.*

“This beautiful girl shone like the sun. She attends school at Red Star School because of the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund. I wonder what she would be doing otherwise.”“Against a dull and dirty backdrop, the YiZu people manage to find brilliant colour in their lives. I was fortunate to capture their radiant beauty.”“The resilience of the YiZu people amazes me. This man lost his wife to illness and his money trying to save her and he is now being looked after by another poor family but he has not lost his smile which captured our hearts.”“The young never leave their mother’s side until they are old enough to work in the fields or, if fortunate enough, go to school.”
“The innocence of this young girl is stunning. I wonder what will become of her. Her mother is working in the background on the new dormitory building at the XiChang Minorities Middle School.”“A smile of gratitude and hope during the welcoming parade at the opening of the AC Sunshine School at Happiness Village. The opening was festive, colourful, musical and heart-breaking.”“A hot and spicy reminder of SiChuan’s famous hot pot – dried chili’s – the delicacy they put in everything we ate.”“It was almost like she was calling out to me to give her hope and a future, the new school at Happiness Village should do just that.”
“Another happy and hopeful soul. This young girl’s photo was taken in the classrooms of the old run-down school at Happiness Village.”“The YiZu Elderly Statesmen. I was entranced by the regal and calm appearance of these men who paraded about commanding respect through their presence.”“One lady’s past hanging on her wall, the only decoration adorning the one-room earth-rammed hut. Her children now go to the Red Star School built by the Charles Foundation. She is a proud lady.”“Students proudly wear their traditional YiZu clothes, bright with colour.”
